I first became interested in composing my senior year in college at the University of Idaho, where I was lucky enough to study flute performance under Leonard Garrison. While there, I attended a counterpoint class in which I started my first composition, "There is 'No' a Spot for You". This piece was completed and premiered at the Seattle Flute Festival in 2013. My writing is directed more by a desire to convey emotions and images than by rules or theories on composition. When I write music, I generally start with an idea and improvise on a flute or piano until I come up with a melody or three. In the end, I use my knowledge of music theory to bring everything together.
My favorite of my compositions so far, "Reborn in Flame", began with my improvising on the alto flute while imagining a fiery sunset. This melody became the theme for the young phoenix. After deciding on the story I wrote a contrasting melody for the beginning of the piece. I then challenged myself to connect these two melodies while describing the lifecycle of my favorite mythological creature. I had the opportunity to premier this piece at the Seattle Composer's Salon in May 2015.
